  • Prescription or over-the-counter medicine belonging to a group called proton pump inhibitors (PPIs).

  • Used to treat conditions caused by excess stomach acid, such as gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD), acid reflux, heartburn, and stomach ulcers.

  • Also used alongside antibiotics to clear Helicobacter pylori bacteria and to protect the stomach when taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).

  • Works by reducing the amount of acid produced by the glands in the lining of your stomach.

  • Standard dose is usually 20mg or 40mg taken once daily, depending on the condition being treated.

  • Best taken in the morning, roughly 1 hour before a meal or breakfast.

  • Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water; do not chew, crush, or break it.

  • If you have difficulty swallowing, the tablet can be dissolved in a glass of non-carbonated water and taken immediately.

  • Common side effects include headache, diarrhoea, stomach pain, constipation, flatulence, nausea, or vomiting.

  • Less common side effects include dizziness, dry mouth, sleepiness, or mild skin rashes.

  • Rare serious side effects include severe watery diarrhoea (signs of C. difficile infection), joint or muscle pain, or sudden allergic reactions. Seek prompt medical advice if these occur.

  • Long-term use (more than 1 year) can increase the risk of bone fractures (especially hip, wrist, or spine) and vitamin B12 or magnesium deficiency.

  • Inform your doctor immediately if you experience unexpected weight loss, persistent dark/tarry stools, or difficulty swallowing.

  • Can interact with other medications, including clopidogrel, digoxin, methotrexate, and certain antifungal treatments.

  • Consult a healthcare professional before taking if pregnant or breastfeeding.
