One in four people in the UK are classified as obese with many others being overweight with BMIs higher than 25. The most common way to determine if you are overweight is to calculate your BMI (body mass index). This is a measure of whether your weight is regarded as healthy in proportion to your height. The NHS uses BMI measurements to give patients a medical categorisation for their weight:
For most people, BMI is a way of determining if they are a healthy weight. However, it should be noted that BMI is not a method of determining or diagnosing obesity. This is because some people with high muscle density can have a higher BMI despite having less body fat.
Another way of calculating your levels of excess fat is measuring your waist size. The NHS states that typically, men who have a waist measurement of 94 cm or more and women who have a waist measurement of 80 cm or more are at a higher risk of developing obesity-related health issues.
If you want to lose weight but diet and exercise alone haven’t worked, then we offer effective treatments to assist you in achieving and maintaining a healthy body. Orlistat is an effective weight loss pill that has been extensively used by patients with great success rate. It acts as a deterrent for high-fat foods due to the stomach discomfort experienced if you do eat a hgh-fat meal. In clinical trials, almost twice as many patients who received Orlistat, an average weight loss of 10 percent or more of their body weight in one year, compared to those on diet alone.
People treated with Orlistat and a reduced-calorie diet with no more than 30% of calories from fat achieved significantly greater weight loss than people who were treated with diet alone. Weight loss with Orlistat and a healthy diet also improves a number of weight-related health risks.
Studies show that weight loss with Orlistat can:
Some people do not succeed in losing weight with Orlistat. These people should not be disheartened. They can have a break of 6 months and try again later, or see a doctor or a weight loss clinic as alternatives.
Being severely overweight can cause health issues such as:
Excess weight can increase the risk of:
Excess weight can exaggerate symptoms of existing health conditions like asthma and impact your mental health and self-esteem.
When we consume foods, particularly those high in fat and sugar, the fat is stored in our bodies as energy reserves. Excess weight can usually be attributed to a higher intake of fat than the level of fat metabolised through physical activity. The body will gain weight if the calories taken by food and drinks exceeds what the body is using. This excess of calories is stored as energy in the form of fat resulting in weight gain.
Generally speaking, obesity or being overweight is caused by eating too much and with very little exercise. However, there are countless other reasons that might lead a person to put on weight. Weight gain can be caused by some of the following:
Binge-eating is a very common cause of obesity, where individuals eat a high amount of sugary, fatty foods then do so again when the sugar high runs out. It’s also about the frequency at which people eat without necessarily being hungry.
Portion size is also important as many people find that they are consistently putting on weight, even if they are eating healthy, balanced meals, which is probably because they are simply eating too much.
The lack of exercise and being active also plays a big part in being overweight. At least one hour of physical exercise each day is recommended by the NHS; small factors like taking the stairs instead of the lift or walking instead of driving short distances can contribute too.
There are many psychological causes for weight gain. The most common being excessive, uncontrollable hunger, ill managed portion sizes and “stress-eating” or “anxious-eating”.
There are hundreds of weight loss products on the market, but few have been clinically proven to be safe and effective. Orlistat 120mg is an established weight loss medication that is licensed and only available with a prescription. It works by reducing your body’s fat intake during digestion and therefore is effective when combined with healthier eating and regular exercise.
Orlistat 120mg (Xenical) is a licensed weight loss medication for adults with a BMI over 30, or those with a BMI over 28 with an associated risk of certain health conditions (e.g. diabetes, hypertension, heart disease or high cholesterol). It can be taken up to 3 times a day and only with meals that contain fat.
Orlistat is a weight loss tablet that changes how your body digests fat, meaning you do not absorb some of the fat from your meals. It works best when you eat low fat meals and spread your daily fat intake over 3 meals. It works by reducing the amount of dietary fat absorbed by the small intestine into the body tissues by blocking enzymes called lipases. The dietary fat is excreted in the stool when you open your bowel. This treatment can stop approximately 30% of dietary fat from absorbing through the gut.
Healthy Diet
Changes to eating habits are the most important changes to make to lose weight. Keeping the number of calories you consume under your daily intake guarantees weight loss. The NHS advises reducing your calorie intake by 600 calories every day. For women, this means having no more than 1400 calories a day or 1900 calories for men. To achieve a healthy and balanced diet, you should increase the amount of healthy foods you eat such as fruits, vegetables, wholegrains etc. Additionally, you should avoid or limit certain types of food when trying to lose weight, such as sugary food and drinks; high fat foods; oily or fried foods etc.
Exercise
Exercise can help with weight loss as you burn up calories by being active. Your body needs physical activity to burn the energy from your food. It can also help to prevent and manage some medication conditions, like diabetes. This will help you lose weight and maintain a healthy weight. The NHS recommends around 150 minutes of moderate intensity exercise every week. This could be things like dancing, cycling, and power walking. You can also do 75 minutes of higher intensity exercise, like running and circuit training. The best way to use exercise for weight loss is by combining moderate and high intensity exercise.
Saxenda
Saxenda is an injectable weight loss pen that contains the active ingredient liraglutide that is injected daily. It starts working within 1 to 2 days, and results are usually seen within a few weeks of taking it. Saxenda works in a few ways to do this. It makes you feel less hungry, slows down the movement of food out of the stomach and makes you feel fuller for longer. Whilst using Saxenda you will need to consume a reduced-calorie diet and increase your physical activity to maximise results.
Mysimba
Mysimba is an effective weight loss medication that works on the psychological aspects associated with weight gain e.g. ‘stress eating’ and ‘anxious eating’. It is used for the management of excess weight in adults with a BM) of over 30 (or over 27 if you also have another high-risk condition like diabetes or hypertension).
Wegovy
Wegovy is a new weight loss injectable medicine which is used much like insulin that’s injected into the fat under the skin once weekly. It works by regulating the way the body naturally gets hungry. Changing your appetite leads to eating few calories and weight loss. It can only be prescribed to patients with a BMI of over 30 or >27 with other risk factors.
Bariatric Surgery
Weight loss surgery known as bariatric surgery is also an option for people who are very obese (usually with a BMI of over 40) and have not succeeded in weight reductions with other means. It is usually a last resort. The NHS will sometimes cover this surgery for patients if they fit certain criteria. The most common types of weight loss surgery include:
These surgeries can help you lose weight as your stomach is smaller, so you feel fuller from less food. This makes it easier to eat less and lower your calorie intake. However, you will still need to eat healthily to get your nutrition.
Weight loss treatments are made for people with high BMIs. Orlistat and Xenical can be prescribed for people with a BMI of over 30 (or 28 if you have a risk factor such as high blood pressure).
Studies show that moderate exercise (such as walking for 30 minutes every day) can result in improvements in overall health. You can add exercise to your activities throughout the day by adding a little extra walking to the things you already do. What's important is including activity regularly in your routine.
Your weight depends on your balance of calories, rather than when you eat. Eating before bed should not affect your weight loss progress, as long as it is a healthy snack. People tend to opt for unhealthy foods as a ‘midnight snack’, which is why there is a perceived link between eating at night and gaining weight.
Healthy breakfasts are essential in losing weight. If you have too few calories to start the day, the body will naturally slow down your metabolism, to conserve whatever energy it has left. This will impede your weight loss. Breakfast is also important to prevent you from feeling hungry throughout the day. You are more likely to make unhealthy choices if you are constantly slightly hungry.
When caloric intake goes below a certain level, the body will involuntarily slow down your metabolism in order to conserve whatever energy it has left. This ‘starvation mode’ is the body’s way of surviving with very little food. This would be helpful if you were actually starving, but it will prevent you from making further weight loss progress. So, in order to lose weight, you must reduce your caloric intake, but still, eat enough to avoid this ‘starvation mode’.
There is no consensus on this. On one hand, eating three main meals each day gives your body more time to burn fat in between meals. On the other, eating five small meals each day will keep your metabolism up to speed and will prevent you from getting hungry. Ultimately, it comes down to your habits and lifestyle. If you are too busy to commit to five regular meals, it may be preferable to stick to three larger ones, so long as you do not resort to unhealthy snacks in between meals. If you know that you feel hungry very frequently, five or six small meals might be a better option. As long as you eat the appropriate amount of calories, the frequency of your meals should not make a notable difference.
Once you have a regular routine, try to avoid skipping meals. You may skip a meal thinking it will help you reduce your intake of calories, but then overcompensate when you get hungry later. It is particularly important to evenly distribute your eating throughout the day if you have diabetes. Overcompensating after skipping a meal will impact your blood sugar levels in a harmful way.
Yoga can be very helpful when you are trying to lose weight. First, yoga is an exercise which can very effectively burn calories. Second, yoga will improve your fitness and flexibility, making other exercises and activities much easier for you. Finally, yoga and meditation help to teach mindfulness, which is very important for a healthy lifestyle.
Taking the stairs instead of the elevator each day are incredibly important in burning calories. Consider using a pedometer or a smartphone app to track how many steps you take each day. If you get above 10,000 steps per day, you will be burning an extra 250 calories.
To sustain your weight loss, you must continue to exercise and be mindful of your diet. Try to incorporate exercise into your routine, so that burning calories does not feel like a chore. Many people find it difficult to maintain the motivation they had when they first started to lose weight
Most often, because exercise increases appetite, people end up accidentally eating more calories than they have burned. This is especially common for women – the hormones which regulate the appetite are made more active by exercise. You must maintain your discipline and stick to foods that are high in fibre such as whole grains and vegetables.
Some people check weekly, some check every day. As long as you do so regularly, it should not matter.
Calculate your BMI (Body Mass Index) to determine whether you have excess body fat. A BMI of over 25 often corresponds to an unhealthy weight, especially if your waist circumference is over 40 inches if you are male and 35 inches if you are female. Excess body fat can increase the risk of diabetes, heart disease, and some types of cancer. To effectively lose excess body fat, you will need to combine a reduction in your caloric intake with increased exercise.
Generally, you will lose 1 pound if you can burn off 3,500 more calories than you have taken in. Spread over a week, you will lose 1 pound if you reduce your calories by 500 each day, and you will lose 2 pounds if you reduce your calories by 1000 each day. This is most effectively done by both increasing your calorie-burning exercise and reducing the number of calories you consume. It is usually not healthy to attempt to lose more than 2 pounds per week.
Exercising while on a diet is the most effective way to lose weight. This is because there are two factors helping to improve your balance of calories. Exercising is also very useful in avoiding regaining weight after it is initially lost.
Controlling your portion sizes and following a meal plan can be great strategies to implement in your diet. Consult with a dietician or personal trainer, or make your own balanced meal plan with professional guidance. As a rule of thumb, try to stick to more natural, whole foods, such as fruits, vegetables, grains, pulses and lean meats, over processed foods that are high in fat, salt and sugar.
Supplements like carnitine can have some benefits, and are often used as part of a balanced diet to help speed up weight loss. However, such supplements should only be used with the advice of a medical practitioner. Weight loss shakes can complement a sensible diet plan, but should never replace meals.
It is not advisable to consume diet tea products, because they often lack approval from a healthcare association. These products are marketed as a way to cleanse, detox and lose weight, but have little scientific proof to back these claims.
The aging process is one of the main reasons why your metabolism slows down. However, by preserving and gaining lean mass through exercise, you can help speed up and maintain your metabolic rate.
Losing weight with an underactive thyroid may pose some difficulties. You may encounter problems such as insulin and/or leptin resistance.
Weight loss may also be more difficult for people with PCOS. This is because higher androgen levels can lead to weight gain.
If all else fails, and you are an extreme case, weight loss surgery may be a viable option. Weight loss surgery is available on the NHS for people who meet certain criteria, including having a BMI of over 40, or a BMI of between 35 to 40 and an obesity-related condition that may improve if you lost weight, e.g. type 2 diabetes.
If you’re looking to lose weight because you have a high BMI, you may be at higher risk of diabetes, heart disease, stroke and cancer. Reaching a healthy weight can lower your risk of experiencing these serious health issues. If you’re living with asthma or erectile dysfunction, weight loss can improve your symptoms. Some people find that reaching a healthy weight improves self-confidence and mental health.
Nutrition and exercise are two of the most important factors to control when using Orlistat for weight loss, but other factors such as hydration, sleep, and goal-setting are vital to consider for making losing weight a reality.
In the most fundamental terms, weight loss is only achievable when calorie expenditure exceeds calorie intake. You won’t be able to lose weight if you’re operating on a large calorie surplus, even with the benefit of Orlistat medication limiting the absorption of dietary fat. When taking Orlistat, it’s recommended to get no more than 30% of your total calories from fats, and to distribute your intake of fats, proteins and carbohydrates evenly throughout the day, ideally across three meals
Orlistat prevents your body absorbing a quarter of the fat molecules that you eat. Without this extra fat, your body starts to utilise stored fat to obtain energy for daily activity.
Orlistat should be taken as a weight loss aid, not as the centre of a weight loss regime. It still takes a healthy diet, exercise and self motivation to achieve the goals possible while taking this medication. Having a high fat diet when taking Orlistat can also increase your risk of unwanted side effects.
Orlistat is the name of a weight loss medication which reduces the absorption of fat from the diet. Some people may know it by the brand name of Xenical. This is a brand of the medication which contains 120mg of orlistat in each capsule, which is the same as our generic Orlistat 120mg capsules. Alli is another brand of medication which contains the active ingredient of orlistat, however it only contains 60mg of orlistat in each capsule. The lower 60mg dose present in Alli is recommended if you are overweight (BMI 28+), while the higher dose of 120mg in Xenical and orlistat is to help weight loss in obese (BMI 30+) patients.
Yes, it is recommended to take Orlistat with meals that contain fat. If you are having a meal that contains very low or zero fat such as a green salad without dressing, you should skip your Orlistat capsule. It can be the case that if your diet is very low on fat already, you may only need to take one or two capsules per day.
Not to worry, weight loss is a slow gradual process. Missing one capsule will not harm your weight loss program as each capsule affects only the meal that it is taken before. This means that missing one will not have any knock on effects for continuing the treatment.
It is not recommended to skip meals during the day. Maintaining a scheduled diet and avoiding unnecessary snacking is the best way to achieve a healthy weight loss plan.
Orlistat does not directly interact with alcohol, so it is not dangerous to drink alcohol when taking Orlistat. It is however, very important to note that alcohol contains a high volume of calories and will negatively impact your weight loss regime if not moderated. The effects of alcohol can also affect your decision making when eating and snacking.
You cannot get prescription weight loss treatment such as Saxenda, orlistat, or Mysimba over the counter. You may be able to get other weight loss treatments over the counter, but these will not contain the same active ingredients.
Yes, you may be able to get weight loss treatment on the NHS. You will have to make an appointment with your GP so they can assess your suitability.
Saxenda®, the weight loss injection (pen) that we offer, works by suppressing your appetite. This means it makes you feel less hungry and fuller quicker.
