Betnesol-N is an antibacterial treatment for mild to moderate outer ear infections, which is sometimes known as ‘swimmer’s ear’ or ‘otitis externa’. It is available in the form of an ear spray, containing the active ingredient betamethasone 0.1% and 0.5% neomycin sulphate. Each of these active ingredients works in a different way to either reduce inflammation or fight the infection.

Betnesol-N is effective at treating ear infections because of its ability to reduce inflammation and fight infection. This is achieved by the combined action of the three active ingredients:

  • Betamethasone is a corticosteroid that works by preventing your immune system from producing the chemicals that cause inflammation, thus reducing itching, soreness and redness.
  • Neomycin sulphate is a broad-spectrum antibiotic that fights infection by stopping bacteria from producing proteins needed for growth.

This dual-action makes Betnesol-N ease the unpleasant symptoms of ear infections, such as pain and swelling, whilst simultaneously helping your body to eradicate the bacteria that is responsible for the infection.

The usual dose of Betnesol-N is 2 to 3 drops into the ear 3 to 4 times daily. You should continue to use the spray until 2 days after the symptoms have disappeared. If your condition worsens or doesn’t improve after 7 days, stop using the spray and speak to your GP for advice.

You should notice an improvement to symptoms relatively soon after using Betnesol-N spray. If there is no improvement after 7 days of use, you should stop the course and consult your GP.

Follow the instructions below to ensure appropriate use of this medication:

  • Before using, ensure the bottle has not been tampered with - the seal on the bottle should not be broken before first use
  • Wash and dry your hands before applying treatment
  • Shake the bottle well before using
  • Pump several times until you get a measured spray
  • One measured spray equals one dose
  • Tilt your head (the affected ear should be facing upwards)
  • Place the nozzle into the affected ear and spray one dose
  • Your head should remain tilted for a few minutes (1-2) to allow the drops to soak in
  • Repeat this process for the other ear if needed
  • Repeat this process 3 times every day, until the inflammation is starting to clear
  • The spray should be disposed of four weeks after first opening it, because after this time the spray may be contaminated.

In the event you miss a dose, it is safe to apply the missed dose as soon as possible. However, if enough time has passed that you should be applying your next dose instead, simply skip the missed dose and resume your typical application schedule.

Always use this medication exactly as your clinician has told you. Check with our clinical team or your GP or pharmacist if you are not sure.
