Champix is a plant-based nicotine-free medication that can help adults quit smoking. Its active ingredient, varenicline tartrate, is not addictive and works to relieve your cravings for a cigarette and withdrawal symptoms associated with quitting smoking. The medication is intended to be used in combination with counselling and quit-smoking education.
There are receptors for nicotine in your brain. When you smoke, the nicotine you inhale attaches to these receptors. This sends a message to a different part of your brain to release a chemical called dopamine. Dopamine gives you a feeling of pleasure. But it does not last long. That's why your body craves more nicotine. This can become a vicious cycle.
Champix works in the brain to reduce cravings and withdrawal symptoms. The medication also decreases the pleasure that people get from smoking. It blocks the nicotine’s effects in your body. The brain has receptors for nicotine. When cigarette smoke is inhaled, the nicotine binds with the receptors to trigger a release of a feel-good chemical called dopamine.
In studies, 44% of Champixusers quit during weeks 9 to 12 of treatment (compared to 18% on sugar pill). Champix also helped reduce the urge to smoke.Champix has been proven to be more effective in helping smokers quit than Zyban® (bupropion hydrochloride).
Champix is typically used once a day at 0.5 mg for the first three days, then increased to 0.5 mg two times a day for the following four days, then continued on 0.5 mg two times a day or increased to 1 mg two times a day until the end of the therapy. An individual is allowed only a maximum dose of 1 mg twice daily. Champix should be taken with a full glass of water, usually after eating.
There are three different approaches to setting a date to quit smoking or the so-called quit date:
It is important that Champix be taken exactly as recommended by your doctor. Take the pills at the same time everyday and if you forget a dose, do not take a double dose to make up for it. Champix can be taken with or without food, but you need willpower and motivation to stop smoking.
Your doctor may gradually decrease the dose of Champix as you stop the medication in order to reduce the risk of you starting to smoke again. For those who have successfully stopped smoking after the 12 week course of treatment, they should take a follow up course for another 12 weeks: 1mg dose once daily to maintain abstinence. Total treatment time should be 24 weeks.
Always use this medication exactly as your clinician has told you. Check with our clinical team or your GP or pharmacist if you are not sure.
