Mebeverine is a medication used to relieve symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and other functional gastrointestinal disorders. It belongs to the class of drugs known as antispasmodics. Mebeverine works by directly affecting the smooth muscle in the gastrointestinal tract, inhibiting calcium influx and blocking sodium channels. These actions help to reduce muscle contractions and spasms without impacting normal gut motility.

Mebeverine is considered effective in alleviating symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and other functional gastrointestinal disorders, particularly by reducing abdominal pain, cramps, and discomfort associated with muscle spasms, and it is generally well-tolerated with a low incidence of side effects.

For adults, the typical dose of mebeverine is 135 mg taken three times a day before meals. Swallow the tablets or capsules whole with water, without crushing or chewing them. Take the medication about 20 minutes before meals and try to maintain a consistent schedule each day. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember, but skip it if it's almost time for your next dose; do not double up on doses. Continue taking mebeverine as prescribed, even if you start feeling better, and do not stop without consulting your doctor.

Always use this medication exactly as your clinician has told you. Check with our clinical team or your GP or pharmacist if you are not sure.
