Amoxicillin is a penicillin-type antibiotic commonly used to treat dental infections caused by susceptible bacteria. It works by inhibiting the growth of bacteria, thereby helping to clear the infection. Typically prescribed for conditions such as dental abscesses or severe gum infections, amoxicillin is effective against a wide range of oral pathogens.

Amoxicillin has shown significant efficacy in treating dental infections, effectively targeting common oral bacteria responsible for conditions such as dental abscesses and severe gum infections. Clinical studies indicate that it can reduce symptoms like pain, swelling, and fever, promoting quicker healing in patients.

It is particularly effective against Streptococcus species and other anaerobic bacteria often found in the oral cavity. Many patients experience relief from symptoms within a few days of starting treatment, highlighting its rapid onset of action.

When used in combination with other antibiotics, amoxicillin can enhance treatment outcomes for refractory infections. Overall, it is a reliable and widely used antibiotic option for managing dental infections, helping to improve patients' oral health and quality of life.

The typical dosage of amoxicillin for adults treating dental infections is 500 mg taken every 8 hours. It's important to start taking
amoxicillin at the onset of infection and to continue the full prescribed course, which usually lasts 7 to 10 days, even if symptoms improve before finishing the medication.

Amoxicillin can be taken with or without food, but taking it with food may help reduce gastrointestinal discomfort. If a dose is missed, it should be taken as soon as remembered, unless it's almost time for the next dose; in that case, the missed dose should be skipped. Patients should not double the dose to catch up.

Always use this medication exactly as your clinician has told you. Check with our clinical team or your GP or pharmacist if you are not sure.

Medicines and their possible side effects can affect individual people in different ways. The following are some of the side effects that are known to be associated with this medicine. Just because a side effect is stated here, it does not mean that all people using this medicine will experience that or any side effect. Amoxicillin is generally well-tolerated, but like all medications, it can cause side effects. Here are the detailed side effects associated with amoxicillin:

Common Side Effects
1. Gastrointestinal Disturbances:
  • Nausea: Some individuals may feel nauseous, leading to discomfort.
  • Vomiting: This can occur especially if the medication is taken on an empty stomach.
  • Diarrhea:Frequent, watery stools may occur, which can be mild to moderate in severity.

2. Abdominal Pain: Some patients may experience stomach cramps or discomfort.

3. Headaches:Amoxicillin can cause headaches in some individuals, usually mild in nature.

4. Skin Reactions: Mild rashes or itching can occur as a side effect.

Serious Side Effects
1. Allergic Reactions: Serious allergic reactions can occur, including:
  • Rash: Can be extensive and widespread.
  • Itching: May accompany the rash or occur independently.
  • Swelling: Particularly of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, leading to difficulty breathing.
2. Liver Enzyme Changes: Rarely, amoxicillin can affect liver function, indicated by:
  • Elevated liver enzymes in blood tests.
  • Symptoms may include jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes), dark urine, or severe fatigue.
3. Clostridium difficile Infection:

Use of antibiotics can disrupt normal gut flora, leading to overgrowth of this bacterium, which can cause severe diarrhea or colitis (inflammation of the colon).

4. Kidney Issues:

Although uncommon, amoxicillin can lead to renal impairment, particularly in patients with existing kidney problems. Symptoms may include decreased urine output or swelling in the legs and ankles.

5. Blood Disorders: Rarely, amoxicillin may cause hematologic reactions such as:
  • Leukopenia: A reduction in white blood cell count, increasing infection risk.
  • Thrombocytopenia: A drop in platelet count, which can lead to bleeding issues.

  • Hemolytic Anemia: The destruction of red blood cells, resulting in fatigue and pallor.
Other Considerations

Drug Interactions: Amoxicillin may interact with other medications, especially anticoagulants(blood thinners) and certain anti-seizure medications, affecting their efficacy or increasing the risk of side effects.

Monitoring: Patients taking amoxicillin, especially for extended periods or at higher doses, should have their response to the medication monitored closely by a healthcare provider for signs of adverse effects.

For full information on side effects and correct use, see the patient information leaflet. If any side effects concern you, or you are experiencing any of the side effects mentioned in the patient information leaflet whilst taking this medication, please contact our clinical team or speak to your GP.

When using amoxicillin, it is important to consider the following cautions and warnings:

Cautions:
  • 1. Allergic Reactions: Patients with a known allergy to penicillin or cephalosporins should use amoxicillin with extreme caution or avoid it altogether, as cross-reactivity can occur.
  • 2. Renal Impairment: Individuals with kidney dysfunction may require dosage adjustments and increased monitoring, as the drug is primarily eliminated through the kidneys.
  • 3. Liver Disease: Caution is advised for patients with liver conditions, as hepatic function can impact drug metabolism and excretion.
  • 4. Gastrointestinal History: Patients with a history of gastrointestinal conditions, such as colitis or Crohn's disease, should be monitored closely, as antibiotic use can disrupt normal gut flora and exacerbate symptoms.
  • 5. Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: While amoxicillin is generally considered safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding, it's important for women to consult their healthcare provider to weigh the risks and benefits of treatment.
  • 6. Severe Infections: In cases of severe infections requiring prolonged or high-dose amoxicillin therapy, monitoring for possible side effects is particularly important.
Warnings:
  • 1. Clostridium difficile-Associated Diarrhea: Amoxicillin use can lead to Clostridium difficile infection, which may cause severe diarrhea. Patients should be informed to report any persistent diarrhea.
  • 2. Bleeding Risk: Caution should be exercised in patients on anticoagulant therapy, as the risk of bleeding may be increased with the concurrent use of amoxicillin.
  • 3. Monitoring Blood Counts: For patients on long-term or high-dose therapy, periodic monitoring of blood counts may be necessary due to the risk of hematologic adverse effects, such as leukopenia or thrombocytopenia.
  • 4. Use with Other Antibiotics: Caution is advised when using amoxicillin with other bacteriostatic antibiotics (e.g., tetracyclines), as they may interfere with the bactericidal activity of amoxicillin.
