Ketoconazole Shampoo is used to treat and prevent dandruff and seborrhoeic dermatitis, with symptoms such as red, inflamed, dry, itchy or flaky scalp. Most sufferers of these conditions have a lack of yeast balance on the scalp. Ketoconazole works by controlling the excess cells that cause dandruff, and treats the symptoms associated with it.

Ketoconazole works by binding to the hair’s natural protein and destroys fungi and yeasts by preventing them from producing a substance called ergosterol, an essential component of fungal cell membranes. This disrupts the fungal cell membrane, causing holes to appear in it and allowing essential cell components to leak out. This kills the fungi and clears up the infection, keeping dandruff and its associated symptoms at bay.

Follow the instructions below to ensure appropriate use of this medication:

  • Rinse your hair or the infected area of skin with water.
  • Shake the shampoo bottle, then squeeze a small amount onto the infected area.
  • If you're treating your scalp, massage the shampoo into your scalp until it makes a lather.
  • Leave the shampoo on for 3 to 5 minutes, then wash it off with water.
  • Wash your hands afterwards. This stops you spreading the infection to other parts of your body or other people.
  • For the first 2 to 4 weeks of treatment, use the shampoo every 3 to 4 days. This will clear the initial bout of dandruff.
  • To prevent any further flare-ups, continue to use the shampoo once every 1 to 2 weeks.
  • Try not to get the shampoo into your eyes or mouth. If it gets into your eyes or mouth, rinse them with water.

If your dandruff symptoms are showing no signs of getting better after four weeks of using the shampoo, please consult your GP for further advice.

In the event you miss a dose, it is safe to apply the missed dose as soon as possible. However, if enough time has passed that you should be applying your next dose instead, simply skip the missed dose and resume your typical application schedule.

Always use this medication exactly as your clinician has told you. Check with our clinical team or your GP or pharmacist if you are not sure.
