Fexofenadine contains the active ingredient fexofenadine hydrochloride, which is an antihistamine. Fexofenadine is a non drowsy antihistamine medication used to treat hay fever and mild allergy symptoms. It is usually prescribed as one 120mg tablet once a day. It works quickly to improve your hayfever and allergy symptoms, but it is not a cure for the condition. This means it will only work while you are taking it.

Patients experiencing the following mild to moderate symptoms of anaphylaxis should take an anti-histamine and have their EpiPen® ready in case of worsening symptoms:

  • Red, raised, itchy rash

  • Swelling of face, lips or eyelids

  • Abdominal pain, nausea and/or vomiting

  • Stomach ache

  • Tingling mouth

Fexofenadine helps to manage the allergy symptoms by blocking the action of histamine. Histamine is one of the chemicals your body releases when it reacts to an allergen. When you suffer from mild allergy symptoms, your body makes histamines. In an allergic reaction histamines can cause itchy, watery eyes, a running nose and sneezing. By reducing the effects of histamines in your body, Fexofenadine clears up your symptoms.

Fexofenadine usually takes effect in one to two hours and is an effective treatment for the early stages of an allergic reaction. As the medication is classed as a non-drowsy treatment, it may be a better solution than other antihistamines.

Fexofenadine lasts around 24 hours, and therefore is usually taken as a single 120/180mg tablet once daily. It should always be taken before a meal. You can take it any time of the day, but you should try to take it at the same time every day.

You can usually take it for as long as you need it, as long as your clinician has told you to. If you miss a dose, do not double your next dose to compensate. Drinking alcohol with fexofenadine may increase the likelihood of feeling drowsy or sleepy.

If you need tablets for hayfever, then you may need to take them regularly during the spring and summer. It will work until you stop taking it, but as it does not cure hay fever, your symptoms are likely to return when you stop if what's triggering your hay fever is still around.

Always use this medication exactly as your clinician has told you. Check with our clinical team or your GP or pharmacist if you are not sure.
