Erectile dysfunction is a condition where the penis does not harden and expand when a man is sexually excited, or when he cannot keep an erection. When a man is sexually stimulated, his body's normal response is to increase blood flow to his penis to produce an erection. By controlling the enzyme, Tadalafil helps to maintain an erection after the penis is stroked. Without physical action to the penis, such as that occurring during sexual intercourse, Tadalafil will not work to cause an erection.

Tadalafil belongs to a group of medications that are known as ‘PDE-5 inhibitors’. They work by relaxing the blood vessels in your penis, which increases blood flow to the area and helps you get an erection. It will not help you get an erection if you are not sexually aroused. The treatment will not resolve the underlying physical cause of your ED or increase your sexual desire.

Tadalafil has a benefit over other erectile dysfunction medications because it is so quick to work, often effective enough to allow sexual intercourse just 20 minutes after taking the pill. This is because it is absorbed into the body more easily and goes into action sooner.

Tadalafil treats ED in 80% of cases. It usually takes 30-60 minutes for Tadalafil to start working. You will only see the effects if you’re sexually aroused. Tadalafil can last for up to 36 hours. It should be tried at least 8 times before giving up, considering a higher dose, or seeking an alternative.

When Required Dose

The standard dose of Tadalafil is 10mg. Depending on your age, height and weight, the cause and the severity of your ED, you may be prescribed a higher dose of 20mg. Dosage does not affect how quickly or for how long the treatment works. Higher doses come with an increased chance of developing side effects. For Cialis Daily, it can take up to 5 days for the full effect to come into effect, as the low dose builds up gradually. However, after this time it will work continuously.

Tadalafil comes in two doses, either 10 mg or 20 mg. It is recommended to begin with the 10 mg tablet and continue if this is effective, as lower doses have less chance of side effects. If you find it is not having the desired effect on your erection after several separate attempts, you can try increasing the dose to 20 mg.

Tadalafil is taken one tablet whole with a glass of water 30 minutes to 1 hour before planning to be sexually active. You can take it with or without food, but keep in mind it may take longer to work if taken with a heavy meal. You only need to take Tadalafil when you are going to be sexually active. The tablet will only work if there is some sexual stimulation. Therefore, some preparation is required and you must plan the time you take the medication accordingly.

Tadalafil has an extremely long duration of action in comparison to other erectile dysfunction medications and has been noted to work up to 36 hours after taking the pill. Never take more than one tablet within 36hrs. Alcohol will limit Tadalafil's effectiveness. Do not combine Tadalafil with other ED medicines.

Daily Dose

Tadalafil Daily is available in two strengths of 2.5 mg and 5 mg. Usually, men begin with the 5 mg dose and adjust as needed. If you find that you are experiencing side effects or the 5 mg seems to be too strong for you, you can try decreasing the dose to 2.5 mg.

Take one tablet whole with a glass of water at the same time each day. You may take it with or without food, as it will not affect how well it works. It is important that you take it regularly every day to ensure you get the full benefit of the medication, so it can be helpful to incorporate it into your daily routine (e.g. with coffee at breakfast). If you have drunk more than 1-2 units of alcohol, you may find Tadalafil is less effective.

Always use this medication exactly as your clinician has told you. Check with our clinical team or your GP or pharmacist if you are not sure.

Medicines and their possible side effects can affect individual people in different ways. The following are some of the side effects that are known to be associated with this medicine. Just because a side effect is stated here, it does not mean that all people using this medicine will experience that or any side effect.

Tadalafil has fewer side effects than other ED medications. In fact, many men who experience nasal congestion, stomach pain, nausea and diarrhea with other drugs find that Tadalafil doesn’t give them these symptoms.

Side effects are uncommon, but can include:

  • Headaches
  • Indigestion
  • Palpitations (racing heartbeat)
  • Light headedness
  • Facial flushing
  • Nasal congestion
  • Muscle aches

These side effects should not last more than a few hours after taking a dose of Tadalafil. Be aware that, as the effects of Tadalafil last longer than other ED medication, the side effects could also last longer.

For full information on side effects and correct use, see the patient information leaflet. If any side effects concern you, or you are experiencing any of the side effects mentioned in the patient information leaflet whilst taking this medication, please contact our clinical team or speak to your GP.

Be aware that sexual activity carries a possible risk to patients with heart disease because it puts an extra strain on your heart. If you have a heart problem you should inform our clinical team.

You should take Tadalafil tablets with caution in the following cases:

  • If you have decreased kidney function
  • If you have decreased liver function
  • If you have a disease involving the heart and blood vessels (cardiovascular disease)
  • If you have a physical abnormality of the penis, such as severe curvature, scarring or Peyronie's disease
  • If you have a condition such as sickle cell disease, bone marrow cancer (multiple myeloma) or leukaemia, in which there is an increased risk of prolonged erections
  • If you are taking medicines for high blood pressure.

Tadalafil tablets should NOT taken by the following persons, or if the below circumstances are true for you:

  • Conditions where sexual activity is not advisable, for example severe heart disorders
  • You have an angina which is not well controlled by medical treatment (an unstable angina)
  • You have an angina that occurs during sex
  • You have had a heart attack in the last three months
